How do you spell excitement? F-O-M-E-N-T-O
Each word spelt correctly by the students of ten schools at the “Spelling Bee” competition, organised by Fomento Resources as part of its pre Ganesh chaturthi activities was a joy to behold.
Organised in a knock out format with preliminaries, semi finals and finals, the event reached a nail biting climax with the hosts - Somnath English High School Savordem pitted against the New Education Institute of Curchorem.
The finals like all other rounds began with the anchor picking one word from a list and asking a a student to spell it. The correct spelling fetched two points and the incorrect spelling was passed onto the next member who would receive a bonus point if spelt correctly.
Both teams were evenly matched. Somnath English high School spelt “inflammation” correctly while New Education Institute responded with “physiology”. "Jamboree" spelt by The New Education Institute was subdued by “Jaundice”, which was spelt correctly by Somnath New English. The first round ended in a tie with a 20: 20 score.

The tie breaker could not end this "War of the words’" “Expedition” met “accommodate” and “lollipop” met “launch”. The war entered unchartered territory as words were picked from a new list not provided to the students during the practice rounds. The New Education Institute Curchorem was the first to fumble when they misspelt “quotation”. All the host team had to do was spell “negotiate” correctly and walk away as champions of the competition. Watched by eager home school students and their energetic headmaster Girish Tendulkar, the home team failed to "negotiate" the word. The scores were now even and the “sudden death” stage arrived, where the first team to misspell would lose. The New Education Institute picked “stratosphere” and spelt it correctly leaving Somnath English High School having to draw level with “archaeology”. Somnath missed again, leaving the New Education Institute Curchorem as the champions.
The principal of the Somnath English High School - Mr Girish Tendulkar summarised the event: “Any team could have won. My school missed out but all students of all schools have done themselves proud”.
