The foundation aims at promoting the basic tenets of Indian
Culture
through better understanding and co-operation between the various
sections of Indian society and the international community as
strengthening all bonds which unite people. To achieve these objectives,
the foundation has chalked out detailed program of which the Modu
Timblo Memorial Lecture was the first. The lecture series was inaugurated
on 15th March 1997, by the eminent jurist, Shri Nani A. Palkhiwala
Born
in 1922, in a traditional family set-up in Assolna, Goa, Modubab early on
showed his mettle. Cherishing a dream to carve an independent identity for
himself, he ventured to Bombay in the early 1940's and then to London in 1948 -
at the young age of 26, on his maiden overseas business trip, determined to
learn the intricacies of international trade and finance.
Learn
and succeed, he did, earning a name for himself. He returned to Goa in
1955 with a mind to use the experience acquired in Bombay and London to
benefit the family business in its growth and diversification.
But,
unable to give free rein to his lively spirit and vision, he broke free again
in 1957. The moral support of his wife, the opportunities he saw in the growth
of Europe and Japan for Goa and himself and his will to win were the origins
of his success.
He
breathed his last on January 8th 1993, but the seed he had sown had grown
into a giant tree - providing shadow and shelter to thousands. By then, there
was no turning back for the Fomento Group of Companies. Fomento's
unparalleled success can be attributed to Modu-babs ability to seize the right
initiative at the right time, from a abundance of promising ideas.
His
was a will built on iron. |
